Carbapenems: A Short Review about their Current Status

In this review, we summarize the current “state of art” carbapenem antibiotics and their role in our antimicrobial armamentarium. Among beta-lactams currently available, carbapenems are unique because they relatively resistant to hydrolysis by most beta-lactamases. Herein, described cost effectiveness, safety, advantages as compared other antibiotics. We also highlight important features that presently clinical use: imipenem-cilastatin, meropenem, ertapenem, doripenem, panipenem-betamipron, biapenem. closing, emphasize some major challenges related oral formulatuion different strategies overcome these challenges.
